A village market
A village market is a place where the villagers buy and sell daily
necessities. It is an indispensable part of village life. Village
markets are of two kinds- the bazar or the daily market and the hat or the
periodical market. A bazar is held everyday
in the morning or in the evening. A hat market is held once or twice a week.
A village market generally takes place by the
side of a river or of a big canal. It is also accessible by various roads.
Most of the village markets take place near big
banyan trees so that they may have shade and shelter for the buyers and sellers. Almost
all daily necessities are available at a village market. The permanent shops in
a village market sell things like
clothes, stationary goods, and grocery items. Temporary shops erected in rows,
sell rice, spices, molasses, betel- leaves
and betel-nuts, etc. Seller of paddy, jute, vegetables, milk, fruits, fish and
fouls sit in the open spaces fixed for them.
A village market has many of its own features.
Prices of things are not fixed in a village market and bargaining is a common practice. The fish market is the most crowded
and noisy place in a village market. A
village market is of great use to the villagers. It saves them from the trouble
of going to distant places to sell their surplus
goods and to buy their necessaries. It is a good meeting place for friends and
relations. Steps should be taken to improve
the conditions of village markets.
